Varicose veins normally develop in the legs, particularly the calf and sometimes the thigh. They are caused when the valves in the veins that are supposed to keep your blood flowing are damaged or missing. This condition is very common that three out of 10 people experience this at some point in their life. Varicose veins don't get better without treatment and they tend to worsen over time.
Spider veins, on the other hand, are like varicose veins but are not very prominent. They are small red, blue or purple veins that usually appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles.
Vein ligation and stripping is the term used for the most common surgical procedure for the removal of varicose veins. It can also be done to prevent venous skin ulcers from returning after treatment. If you have both varicose and spider veins, you may have more than one type of treatment. Sclerotherapy or laser therapy may be done to treat spider veins.
Preparing for the Surgery
During your pre-operation consultations with your surgeon, you will be evaluated for fitness to undergo the procedure. You will likewise be made to understand the risks and complications associated with the surgery.
If you are a smoker, you will be advised to stop smoking tobacco products as this increases your risk of getting wound infection and may slow your healing and recovery. You may also be asked to stop the intake of aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin and other drugs that may cause your bleeding problems.
You are also to fast eight hours before the procedure which means you are not to eat or drink anything on the day of the surgery.
About the Procedure
Depending on the extent of the area to be treated, the operation lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. You may be under general anesthesia where you will be asleep throughout the surgery, or under local anesthesia with sedation.
Your surgeon will make a small incision in your groin area at the top of your leg. The damaged valve is then tied off or ligated to stop blood from flowing through it. The vein is then carefully pulled or stripped out of your leg through another incision made lower down in the leg.
The incisions will be closed with dissolvable stitches.
Post-surgical Care and Recovery
To ensure optimum results from your varicose vein surgery, you must closely follow your surgeon's advice and suggestions, in addition to having proper rest. Here are some tips and general expectations after your operation:
- You will need to rest until after the effects of anesthesia have passed. You may be prescribed pain reliever to for any discomfort you may feel as the anesthetic wears off.
- Your legs may be wrapped with bandages for several days to control swelling and bleeding.
- When you are resting, try to keep your legs raised higher than the level of your heart. Place pillows or blankets under your legs to prop them up. This helps to prevent swelling on your legs and eases pressure on your wounds.
- You may also be wearing compression stockings for about one week to help maintain blood flow.
- Do not drive or use machinery if you are taking narcotic pain medicine which may be prescribed by your surgeon.
- Do not sit or stand in one place for an extended period. Take at least 10 to 12 short walks a day, for five to 10 minutes each.
- Avoid doing strenuous physical activity for three to six weeks. You will most likely be able to return to your normal routine two weeks after your surgery.
