Vaginal surgery refers to any of the surgical procedures done to repair or treat various problems associated with the female genitalia. Some of the more popular procedures include:
Reduction Labiaplasty
Also referred to as labioplasty, this surgical procedure is performed on the large labia to better define and reduce their outward appearance as well as to correct shape irregularities.
Enlarged labia can be caused by genetics, sexual intercourse or difficulties in childbirth. Women with this condition sometimes experience pain during intercourse or feel discomfort wearing tight clothes and doing even normal everyday activities. Others may feel unattractive and sexually insecure.
The procedure normally takes one to two hours to complete and you will be under conscious sedation. You will feel discomfort at the area of surgery for the first few days which will then gradually fade away. Your surgeon will give you prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics.
Although you can most likely return to work four to seven days following your surgery, you are recommended to refrain from strenuous activity for at least four weeks. Sexual activity can resume after six to eight weeks. Full recovery normally takes place after six weeks.
Posterior Repair
When the tissue supporting your vagina and rectum do not return to normal after pregnancy, great pressure is exerted on your vagina that cause a bulge or weakness. To repair this, you need a posterior repair, also called a prolapse operation. A number of women who suffer from a prolapsed rectum do not recognize the condition until they are post-menopausal.
You will be under general anesthesia for this surgery. During the operation, your surgeon will make an incision through the back lining of your vagina and shorten the rectum's support with stitches. The bulging section of the vagina is also cut away.
After surgery, you are recommended to stay in the hospital for an additional six days for post-operative care and monitoring. You will most probably be needing painkillers for the next four days following the surgery. You will also need a catheter for about two days.
You should wear sanitary napkins as dressing for about six weeks and should avoid tampons during this period. You may resume with work after six to 12 weeks and with your regular routine after about three months. You may resume sexual activity only after discomfort and bleeding completely subside.
Hymenoplasty
This surgery is designed to repair and reconstruct the hymen - the thin, ring-like skin membrane that partially covers the vagina opening. Hymen reconstruction or rejuvenation is usually done for ethnic, cultural, religious or personal reasons.
The procedure involves using dissolvable stitches to reconnect the skin membrane that once partially covered the opening of the vagina. The edges are then stitched back together to reform the ring as it was before your first sexual contact.
Hymenoplasty is preferably done two weeks before your menstruation to reduce the risk of infection and to speed up healing. You will be under local anesthesia with sedation for this outpatient procedure which takes about one to two hours to complete.
For the first 24 hours after the operation, you are encouraged to rest but do some light walking. You should avoid strenuous activities for two to three days. You should likewise refrain from sexual intercourse and using tampons for the first six weeks.
Other surgical procedures like vaginal tightening, hysterectomy and uterine suspension are also available to deal with other symptoms and conditions that afflict you.
