What Refractive Lens Exchange?

Reflective lens exchange is a type of vision correction surgery wherein the eye's natural lens is removed and replaced with a man-made lens. This advanced procedure can reduce or eliminate large amounts of nearsightedness and farsightedness and is generally reserved for those who are beyond the accepted treatment range for LASIK and are thereby not good candidates for either LASIK or other laser procedures.

While Refractive Lens Exchange is relatively new, it's largely similar to cataract surgery. In Refractive Lens Exchange, the lens that's causing you problems is removed and replaced with a new lens that improves focusing power of the eye.

What Makes A Good Candidates for RLE?

At minimum, you'll need to be at least 21 years of age; have stable vision, meaning you should have no change in eyeglass prescription for at least six months; have healthy eyes with no history of eye disease; and understand fully the procedure and accept the risks associated with it.

RLE can be used to treat extreme errors of refraction such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It can also benefit people with early stages of cataract. Refractive surgeons have noted, however, that best results are experienced by those with moderate to high hyperopia or farsightedness and those who are over the age of 45 and have presbyopia.

Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange

As mentioned earlier, Refractive Lens Exchange can effectively treat refraction problems that may not be adequately, if at all, corrected by LASIK surgery. With RLE, you may also experience faster visual recovery and stable vision with no risk of regression.

When undergoing RLE it's also worth noting that people with mild cataracts having the surgery reduce the likelihood of needing cataract surgery in the future. And, with multifocal replacement lenses, the procedure can correct presbyopia and reduce the need for reading glasses too. It really has a lot of benefits!

Of course, as you might expect of a newer, more advanced procedure, Refractive Lens Exchange in Thailand is still a little pricier than LASIK surgery is here, but its benefits and its accessibility by those who cannot have LASIK make the slight increase in cost worth every penny.

Risks and Complications of RLE

Our refractive surgeons will make every effort to ensure you have a successful and worry-free treatment and the chances of anything negative happening are statistically quite small. Still, as with any medical procedure, there are risks and sometimes the possibility of developing complications. In the case of Refractive Lens Exchange, these potential concerns include retinal detachment, glaucoma, posterior capsular occlusion or secondary cataract, infection, dislocation of the lens, over-correction or under-correction, and bleeding of the eye.

Because of its similarity to cataract surgery, you'll note that these potential complications are basically the same as those you might hear about when considering cataract surgery. The similarity of the procedures means that, unlike with a new technique or untested procedure, surgeons already have a body of knowledge that helps them do their best to avoid any problems in the future!

Spend 10 days in Thailand

RLE is an outpatient procedure, so you won't need to spend any nights in the hospital under normal circumstances - you'll need to follow all the post-surgical guidelines, but otherwise you should be able to return to your vacation in Thailand.

Initial Recovery: 1 Day

The surgeon will discuss the full recovery period with you, but you'll need to spend these days in Thailand for an initial recovery period just to make sure everything's going fine before you head back to Australia.

Under General Anesthesia

The procedure is performed under General Anesthesia, meaning that you'll be awake for the duration and shouldn't experience any pain or discomfort.

What Does The Cost Cover?

The cost will cover everything related to your surgery itself, your care and the services needed to make sure you get the best results possible! That means that the cost covers your hospital stay, surgeon's consultation, the procedure itself, any medication, any follow-up checkup you might have, the meals you're served - and a free gift from us :) We always do our best to quote you the full price up front and we NEVER CHARGE A BOOKING FEE. We just want to make that clear, because many companies in Australia do!
