LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis, which uses a laser underneath a corneal flap to alter the shape the cornea (the transparent front covering of the eye). LASIK eye surgery uses a highly specialized laser designed to improve your vision, reduce or even eliminate the use of glasses or contact lenses, and treat refractive errors such as:

Myopia or Nearsightedness - With this condition, there is a mismatch in focusing power and eye length that causes distant objects to be blurry and near objects to be clearer.

Hyperopia or Farsightedness - Here, the same mismatch causes near objects to be blurry and distant objects to be relatively clearer.

Astigmatism - With this condition, either the corneal or lens shape is distorted which causes multiple images on the retina. Some people suffer from astigmatism in combination with either myopia or hyperopia.

Pre-Surgery Evaluation

Before undergoing LASIK eye surgery, you need to have comprehensive consultations with your eye surgeon. He will assess if you are fit to go through the procedure and should explain to you the risks and complications associated with the operation.

During the evaluation, your eye surgeon will look for certain risk factors that may make you a less than ideal candidate for the procedure. Such risk factors are:

High Prescriptions - If you have extreme eyeglass prescriptions, too much corneal tissue must be removed to safely perform the surgery.

Thin Corneas - If you have very thin corneas, you are at risk of excessive corneal weakening after surgery.

Abnormal Corneal Curvature - This condition may indicate that your cornea is weaker than average. A device called a topographer is used to measure the overall shape and curvature of your cornea.

Dry Eyes - Symptoms of this condition such as burning, redness and tearing may be aggravated after surgery.

Previous Refractive Surgery - Prior corneal surgery or other types of refractive surgery like radial keratotomy may cause complications.

Generally, a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery is someone who is at least 18 years old, demonstrates no change in refraction for at least one year, has not had experienced eye infection or injury in the past year, and has realistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure.

The Procedure

The traditional LASIK procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes to perform on both eyes. It begins with your eye being anesthetized with topical eye drops. You will then be asked to lie on a bed or a reclining chair with laser equipment mounted above. Your eye will be held open by a special instrument called the speculum while the other eye will be protected by a shield.

Your surgeon will then create a hinged corneal flop on the outer surface of the eye to expose the underlying cornea. This is done with the use of a computer guided laser.

After the flap has been created, reshaping of your cornea will follow. Corneal tissue will be removed with the use of an excimer laser, which is applied in small, rapid bursts. This part of the procedure takes only about 15 seconds per eye. The flap is then replaced after your cornea has been reshaped. No stitches are necessary and your eye will heal by itself. And because only a minimal amount of tissue is affected, the procedure is practically painless.

You may experience immediate improved vision after the surgery although it sometimes takes up to six months before your vision stabilizes.

Side Effects and Complications

LASIK eye surgery is considered very safe and satisfaction rating among patients is extremely high.
Side effects are mostly temporary and should pass within a few days following surgery. Common side effects include starbursts, difficulty with glare and night vision, dry eyes, loss of visual clarity and foreign body sensation.

On rare occasions, some patients may experience complications like over or under correction, infection, flap wrinkles, central corneal islands, epithelial ingrowths, corneal ecstasia and astigmatism. But thanks to advances in LASIK technology, developing such complications has been dramatically reduced. Also, many of these problems can easily be corrected with additional treatment.
