Jaw reduction surgery is a cosmetic procedure done to achieve any or all of the following:

  • Reduce the width of the lower face
  • Create a smoother mandibular angle resulting in more balanced facial features
  • Reduce overly prominent cheekbones
  • Soften the features of a square-shaped face to make it oval

Pre-Surgery

To be a good candidate for jaw reduction surgery, you have to be generally healthy as well as emotionally and psychologically stable. You also have to have realistic expectations about the procedure.

During pre-surgery consultations, your surgeon will assess your overall fitness to undergo the operation. You will be required to take routine laboratory tests on top of other examinations that are prerequisite to this specific procedure. You will also be informed about the risks, limitations and projected outcome of the operation.

For weeks leading up to your surgery, your surgeon will give you a set of guidelines that you need to follow closely to ensure optimum results and proper healing. If you are a smoker, you may be asked to stop smoking two weeks before the procedure. The same thing goes for the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Your surgeon may also ask you to adjust dosage or altogether stop the intake of certain medications, vitamins and supplements. It is important to disclose your full medical history during consultations.

The Jaw Reduction Procedure

During a jaw reduction surgery, small incisions are made inside your mouth, just between the gum and cheek mucosa. This serves as the access to the prominent areas of the jaw bone. The line of bone resection is determined with the use of template model from x-ray film. The marked areas are then cut, curving down from back to front.

You will be under general anesthesia for this procedure which takes approximately three to four hours to complete. You will be required to stay an extra two nights in the hospital for monitoring. Follow up check up and removal of stitches will be done after seven days.

Post Surgery

You will experience swelling and mild to moderate pain for several days following your operation. You may also experience temporary numbness along the incision line or around the lower lip. Medication prescribed by your surgeon will help alleviate any discomfort you might feel. Much of the swelling subsides after 10 days.

Your surgeon will give you a soft diet guide to be taken based on your tolerance level. You will also have to observe a special oral hygiene regimen to clean your mouth.

You are advised to refrain from doing strenuous activities for two to three weeks. You can, however, resume light chores after about 10 days.

When majority of the swelling and bruising is gone by the second week, significant improvement can be seen right away although the final result will be clearly apparent after three to six months.

Risks and Complications

Jaw reduction surgery is a relatively safe procedure and satisfaction among patients is really high. But as with any surgical procedure, complications may occasionally happen. Possible complications include:

  • Bleeding
  • Prolonged swelling
  • Asymmetry or over-resection
  • Nerve injury
  • Infection

Following your surgeon's pre- and post-operative advice will greatly reduce the onset of these complications.

The surgeon will discuss the full recovery period with you, but you'll need to spend these days in Thailand for an initial recovery period just to make sure everything's going fine before you head back to Australia.

That means that the cost covers your hospital stay, surgeon's consultation, the procedure itself, any medication, any follow-up checkup you might have, the meals you're served - and a free gift from us :) We always do our best to quote you the full price up front and we NEVER CHARGE A BOOKING FEE.
