What Is a Forehead Lift?
A Forehead Lift, also called a Brow Lift, is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin of the forehead. This will help get rid of sagging forehead skin, droopy eyebrows and even help a bit with upper eyelids. The procedure may be done alone or in conjunction with other surgeries like Mid Face Lift/Full Face Lift, Eyelid Surgery or Rhinoplasty to achieve an overall balanced appearance for your face.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Forehead Lift?
A Forehead Lift is commonly performed on people in their 40's to 60's to help reverse the visible signs of aging mentioned above. It can also help younger Australians with congenitally low brows who just aren't happy with the way they look or who experience problems with their upper field of vision due to their abnormally low brows.
In general, you are a good candidate if you have one or more of these facial characteristics:
- Sagging brows
- Tissue that hangs down at the outer part of the eyelids
- Horizontal wrinkling on the forehead
- A dysfunctional nose
- Deep furrows between the eyes
How is the Procedure Done?
Forehead Lift surgery at our partner hospitals in Thailand - like Yanhee International Hospital or Bangkok Hospital Phuket - is done under general anesthesia to make sure that the procedure goes as smoothly as possible. Many people are worried about having their heads shaved when undergoing a Forehead Lift, but you don't need to worry. Some hair immediately along the incision line may need to be trimmed, but it won't be anything traumatic. If your hairline is high, the incision may be placed just at the hairline. If you are bald or balding, a mid-scalp incision may be used to hide the scar.
The incision usually follows a headphone-like pattern, beginning at the level of your ears and is continued across the top of your forehead down to the other side of the head. The incision is normally made well behind the hairline so the scar will not be visible.
Your surgeon will then work through the incision to lift the skin of your forehead so the underlying tissue can be removed and the forehead muscles can be altered. Your eyebrows may also be lifted and excess skin at the incision point will be trimmed away to give your forehead a smoother appearance.
The incision is then closed with stitches or staples. Before dressings are applied, your hair and face will be washed to prevent irritation to the scalp skin.
What are the Risks and Complications of a Forehead Lift?
A Forehead Lift carries the same risks as most plastic surgeries. In most cases you will experience some swelling, bruising, and light scarring (which will be hidden by the hairline). In some cases there may be infection, though this will be treated for ahead of time using antibiotics. There are other Forehead Lift-specific problems that could possibly occur and your surgeon will discuss these with you when it comes time for your surgery.
Most Forehead Lift surgeries, though, go just fine and patients are happy with their results as long as they're open and honest with the surgeon and listen to his advice on expectations.
