What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, involves the removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and skin from your breasts to reduce and achieve a breast size that is in proportion with your body. It may also involve the reshaping and contouring of your breasts and repositioning of your nipples. Breast reduction can also be performed to even out the size of your breasts if one is much bigger than the other.
What Benefits Can You Experience From Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery can relieve the discomforts that come with having large breasts, including:
- Chronic back, shoulder and neck pain
- Grooves in the shoulders and back caused by pressure from bra straps
- Excessive sweating, rashes and skin infections under the breasts
Breast reduction can also resolve other issues such as:
- Low-hanging breasts and stretched skin
- Difficulty fitting into bras and clothing
- Poor posture
- Restricted physical activity
- Low self-esteem
What Factors Should You Consider?
Breast reduction surgery can be performed at any age, even in teens in some cases. Of course, it is not advised to have breast surgery if you are under 18 and your breasts haven't fully developed. However, if your large breasts are causing severe discomfort then breast reduction surgery can be a very good option. As always, we will work with you and your surgeon during consultation to make the best decision possible.
If you're planning to have children it is advisable to postpone your breast reduction surgery until after giving birth. Changes to your breast tissue during pregnancy could alter your results, causing your enlarged breasts to need more work later. Breast reduction is also not recommended for women who intend to breast feed, so this must be kept in mind.
How Should You Prepare For Breast Reduction Surgery?
At least two weeks before (and after) your breast reduction surgery you should stop smoking. Smoking increases your risk of chest infections and can slow the healing of wounds, leaving you with worse scarring after your breast reduction.
You should also stop drinking alcohol and taking any medications and supplements that have not been approved by your surgeon. And, as with all procedures involving general anesthesia, you will need to stop eating and drinking for eight hours before your surgery.
Finally, it's important that you understand the procedure and the potential risks and complications that come with breast reduction surgery.
What Happens During The Breast Reduction Procedure?
Breast reduction is an inpatient surgical procedure that requires you to stay 2 nights at one of our partner hospitals. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, which puts you to sleep during the surgery. This "sleep" is different from regular sleep because it prevents you from feeling or responding to pain signals and anesthetizes your brain, stopping it from forming memories. Surgery can be a little rough on the body, so general anesthesia is a good way to help your body heal faster.
There are various ways to perform breast reduction surgery and the operation usually takes 2 to 4 hours. Your surgeon will discuss which method is most appropriate for you and how your breasts will look like after breast reduction.
The surgeon will typically make incisions on the lower part of the breast - around the areola, vertically down from the areola to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease - where excess breast tissue, fat and skin will be removed. In order to properly shape and contour your new breasts, the nipple and areola will then be moved to suit your new size.
The incisions will be closed with stitches and your breasts will be covered with supportive dressing or a support bra. After breast reduction surgery, small plastic tubes may be placed in each breast for up to 48 hours to allow blood and fluids to drain safely.
What Are Some Risks and Complications Associated With Breast Reduction Surgery?
In general, breast reduction is a safe and predictable procedure. However, as with any type of surgery, there are certain risks that can include infection, bleeding or permanent loss of sensation in the breast and nipple. The ability to breastfeed may also be affected, since many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples are removed during surgery.
A rare complication of breast reduction surgery is the development of small sores around the nipples which can be treated with antibiotic creams. An even rarer complication is the loss of blood supply to the nipple and areola. However, the possibility of such problems is diminished by strictly following your surgeon's advice.
Are There Any Short-Term Side Effects?
After your breast reduction surgery, your breasts will be wrapped with elastic bandages that will be removed in 1 to 2 days and replaced with a soft support bra. It is important to wear the support bra for as long as your surgeon recommends to ensure optimal recovery.
Right after surgery, your breasts will be bruised and swollen. You may feel some pain for the first 2 days and some discomfort for about a week but you can manage it with pain medication as prescribed by your surgeon. You can also expect some temporary loss of sensitivity in your nipples and breast skin due to the swelling. Your sensation should return to normal as the swelling subsides over the next 6 weeks.
In addition to this, your first menstruation after the breast reduction surgery may cause your breasts to hurt. Random pains for the next few months after surgery are not totally unheard of, but they can be managed easily with pain relievers.
What Will My Recovery Be Like? How Long Will It Last?
We'll work with you and your surgeon to make sure that you learn all you need to know about your recovery period. Of course, you'll need to strictly follow his instructions to ensure the best possible results and the proper healing of the surgical incisions, but the recovery isn't very difficult.
Typically, you should be up and about in 1 to 2 days after breast reduction. As well, you'll be able to return to work and social activities within roughly 2 weeks. For the first several weeks after your breast reduction surgery, your stamina may be lower as well and therefore you should limit your exercise to stretching and swimming until you regain your normal energy level.
One of the more surprising, but important, recovery rules for many patients is the surgeon's advice that you should abstain from sex for about a week after breast reduction. In fact, contact with the breasts should be restricted to gentle touching for roughly 6 weeks. It's important during the recovery period not to disturb your breast's healing process so that the end result is everything you hope it will be. For the same reason, you should also avoid lifting or pushing heavy things for 3 to 4 weeks after surgery.
Will There Be Any Scarring?
Breast reduction will leave somewhat noticeable, permanent scars located around the areola, in a vertical line that extends downwards along the lower crease of the breast. Scars may protrude and remain red for several months after breast reduction surgery, but they will gradually become less obvious, ideally becoming nearly invisible over time. In fact they sometimes eventually fade to thin white lines that are barely noticeable.
Alright, What Can I Expect To Get Out Of My Breast Reduction?
After breast reduction, women like you can expect smaller, firmer and shapelier breasts that are in proportion to the rest of your body. The procedure also helps relieve a variety of medical problems caused by the heavy weight of large breasts, including back, shoulder and neck pain, skin irritation and breathing and posture problems.
You will find it easier to participate in sports and other physical activities. You may also feel happier and more confident, being less self-conscious about the way your chest looks. Overall, your self-image should improve as long as you manage your expectations properly, which we'll help you with.
The results of breast reduction surgery are permanent, but like everything else in the body your breasts will change over time based on personal factors like age, weight gain or pregnancy.
