The Difference Between VASER and Traditional Liposuction

VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) is the trade name for an ultra-sound assisted liposuction system. The system uses sound waves to emulsify or liquefy fatty tissue from the body. Surgeons use it for small delicate areas such as the chin and neck, as well as bigger areas like the back, chest and abdomen.

The system selectively targets only fat cells while preserving nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. The fat cells are emulsified and removed by suction with minimal disturbance to surrounding tissue thereby yielding smooth results. The procedure is also sought for its high volume efficacy, which basically means that the system allows for the safer extraction of more fat.

Research shows that VASER liposuction has a number of other advantages as compared to traditional suction-assisted liposuction as well as earlier generations of ultrasound-assisted liposuction. No serious complications, burns, contour irregularities or prolonged swelling have been noted. In most cases, VASER Liposuction can be performed without general anesthesia, therefore reducing risk for patients and allows for quicker recovery.

In addition, incisions are generally smaller with the VASER system so there is minimal blood loss. Also, VASER liposuction is particularly ideal for tight fibrous areas such as the back and posterior flanks where increased blood loss would normally be expected.

Depending on the area to be treated, the procedure usually takes one to two hours to finish, and is normally carried out under local anesthetic.

Who is a Good Candidate?

VASER liposuction is suitable for those who are in good general health and have realistic expectations about the procedure. If you have diabetes, a weakened immune system, heart or lung disease, or a history of blood clots, VASER liposuction may not be for you.

The procedure is also suited for patients undergoing both small and large-volume fat removal and fat removal in tight fibrous areas like the back and posterior flanks. Women considering breast reduction and men who suffer from male breast development or gynecomastia can also consider having the treatment.

Overall, general success has been reported in treating areas like the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, buttocks, arms, back, male breasts, chin, and neck.

What to Expect After VASER Lipo?

After treatment, you may be asked to wear compression garments to help minimize bruising and swelling. Any soreness and discomfort are considerably less than what you'd expect with traditional liposuction and can easily be managed with prescription medication.

Results are often visible immediately after surgery but will gradually improve over the following months. Of course, sticking to a healthy diet and doing regular exercise will greatly help you in maintaining your shape.

Overall, VASER liposuction has a very good safety track record. Downtime is very minimal and except for really vigorous activities, you can resume with your regular routine almost immediately after the procedure.
