An arm lift, also called a brachioplasty, is one of the most popular plastic surgery techniques today. The procedure is normally done after you experience massive weight loss. It helps create a well-defined, trim and toned upper arm by removing excess skin along the lower border of the arm. This surgery is performed when excess skin rather than fat is the underlying problem. If necessary, liposuction may be done in conjunction for a more balanced result.
Preparing for Surgery
During consultations, your surgeon will assess your fitness to undergo an arm lift. If you are found healthy enough, you will be given a list of detailed instructions you need to follow for the days leading up to your operation.
You may be asked to stop or regulate taking certain medications such as aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and certain vitamins that are known to increase the risk of bleeding during surgery. Your surgeon may also suggest that you take certain supplements like arnica and bromelain to help reduce swelling and bruising.
If you smoke, you may be asked to quit at least two weeks before your arm lift; same thing with consuming alcoholic drinks. Your surgeon may also recommend a dietary regimen before your arm lift.
The Arm Lift Procedure
You will either be under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia for this surgery which takes anywhere from one to three hours to complete.
During an arm lift, your surgeon will make incisions on the inside or back of your arm which may span from the underarm to just above the elbow. After the incision is made, excess fat may be removed by liposuction. Excess skin is then trimmed and tightened, and then the incisions are stitched or sutured back in place. Your skin is then smoothed over the new contour of your arm.
Recovery and Downtime
Your new trim and toned arm will be apparent almost immediately after the surgery although you may experience some swelling and bruising around the affected area. Propping your arms up with pillows can help reduce swelling and make you more comfortable during recovery. Also, your incisions should not be subjected to excessive force, abrasion or motion during the recovery period. Any mild pain and discomfort can be relieved by medicine prescribed by your surgeon.
A high protein diet may be recommended to facilitate quick recovery.
Although you may resume doing regular chores after about two weeks, you will most likely be asked to refrain from doing strenuous work or exercise for four to six weeks following your arm lift.
Risks and Complications
While an arm lift is considered very safe, risks and complications may occur, as with any other surgical procedure. These include:
- Scarring
- Excessive bleeding or hematoma
- Blood clots
- Poor healing or wound separation
- Skin or fat necrosis
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Anesthesia risks
- Cardiac and pulmonary complications
- Persistent swelling or fluid accumulation
- Persistent pain
- Change or loss of skin sensation
You should contact your surgeon if these symptoms persist and if you experience chest pains, shortness of breath and unusual heartbeat.
So as you can see, an arm lift is what you need if you want to say bye-bye to the droopy, sagging, nasty excess skin hanging like bat wings on your arms. You've seen a preview of how fairly easy the procedure is, now let us help you get over the hesitation hump.
